Boulder, CO., April 10, 2006 – IP Partner
LLC, a consulting firm specializing in intellectual asset
management, today announced the publication of an article, Using
Patent Landscape Mapping to Identify Specialty Pharma Opportunities,
in the March/April issue of Specialty Pharma.
Patent Landscape Mapping (PLM) is a tool to
analyze existing intellectual property (IP) to determine the risks
and opportunities of participating in a given technology and/or
product space. PLM describes the technologies and alternative
solutions that have been applied to a particular product category
and identifies competitors, outlining their strategies, strengths
and problem-solving approaches. PLM enables a company’s scientific
and commercial management teams to identify the best opportunities
for investment in a selected product area, to create a strategy to
protect their IP, and to establish differentiation with respect to
their competitors.
Specialty Pharma, www.specialtypharma.com,
is an innovative publication committed to providing specialty
pharmaceutical companies a forum to communicate to their current and
prospective business partners, namely big pharma, biotech, drug
delivery, drug discovery, and other specialty pharma companies as
well as the investment banking community.
“We are pleased to be able to present our
methods in such a focused and well-read publication. IP often takes
a center stage in battles between companies with billions of dollars
and years of R&D at stake. It’s no wonder that every company having
intellectual property needs to make patent landscape mapping an
integral component of its risk reduction protocol . Our methods help
businesses to accomplish that.” Says Dr. Eve Y. Zhou, Present of IP
Partner.
The article is authored by David A. Sacks.
VP, Licensing and Eve Y. Zhou, Ph.D., President of IP Partner LLC.
Mr. Sacks recently joined IP Partner and has over 30 years of
experience in the pharmaceutical industry in licensing, business
development and product development. He is also the founder and
president of Pharma Technologies LLC, a business development
consulting firm. Dr. Zhou is the creator of the IP-Savvy(SM) series
of proprietary tools for patent mining and patent landscape
analysis.

Boulder, CO. – November 24. 2003
IP Partner LLC, a firm specializing in
intellectual property (IP) management, recently completed a pivotal
patent analysis and mapping project for encryptX. According to
encryptX President David Duncan, IP Partner’s work has allowed
encryptX to address investors’ needs and attract additional
investment to the small but growing company. This is great news for
a startup focused on developing cutting-edge information technology
products.
Intellectual property has become a leading
indicator of corporate value in today’s savvy and demanding
financial community. Because technology develops at such a torrid
pace, intellectual property often comprises a significant portion of
a technology company’s value and gives differentiation in the
marketplace. encryptX is no exception. The company develops software
security technology for protecting, managing and sharing sensitive
information.
encryptX’s charge from its investors was to
identify defensible technology that belongs to encryptX, and to
develop an IP strategy to ensure continuing revenue streams for
investors. Duncan says that, without IP Partner’s help, he knew he
was facing an enormous task. “We knew we would need outside help. We
needed an IP attorney, but it’s a very expensive process, and the
amount of time and work needed would make it prohibitive. We
realized that the way to offset the cost was to do a lot of the
legwork ourselves. But we are a small company with a small staff
focused on critical activities. We didn’t have that luxury. IP
Partner pitched us on the approach and how they would help us, and
by using their service we saved a significant amount of money.”
encryptX worked with IP Partner for two
months. Says Duncan, “The product exceeded our expectations in every
way. We also engaged a patent attorney. He looked at the patent map
and was blown away.” Duncan said the attorney is using IP Partner’s
color-coded map to do his work.
Dr. Eve Zhou, founder and President of IP
Partner, comments, “encryptX is like many small firms whose patents
and know-how often are the biggest, if not the only valuable assets
they have. Yet most of them don’t have the expertise in house when
it comes to managing and utilizing IP as a strategic asset. With
outside help they can build an IP portfolio early on and along the
way that will strengthen the company’s goals, whether that is to
secure funding, attract strategic partnerships, create royalty fees,
or increase product revenues.”
Duncan agrees. EncryptX is already backed
with its investors and, because of the work of IP Partner, can
present their defensible technology in a documented and
straightforward manner. Duncan is excited about continuing to work
with IP Partner. “The next phase is the strategy phase, forming the
plan into a strategy that will help us take advantage of what we
learned so far. We have reaped significant value so far, but we’re
even more excited about what lies ahead.”
